1. UPI Transactions Reach Record 24.51 Billion in August 2026
India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) recorded its highest-ever monthly transaction volume in August 2026. According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions with a total value of approximately ₹29.82 trillion.

Daily transaction volume increased from around 763 million in July to 791 million in August. The August figures marked the second consecutive monthly record for UPI transaction volume.
Other digital payment systems recorded mixed trends during the month. While IMPS transactions declined, FASTag and AePS transactions registered growth.
Key Fact: August 2026 became the second consecutive month in which UPI achieved a new record for transaction volume.
2. RBI Appoints Suman Ray as Executive Director
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) appointed Suman Ray as Executive Director with effect from September 1, 2026. Before taking up the new responsibility, Ray was serving as the Regional Director of the RBI’s Maharashtra office.
As Executive Director, he will be responsible for important areas including the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) and the RBI’s Premises Department.
Ray brings more than 30 years of experience with the central bank. During his career, he has worked across several key areas, including currency management, financial inclusion, payment and settlement systems, consumer education and protection, and human resources.

3. Antonio Guterres to Attend 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is scheduled to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit, which will be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, 2026.
India is hosting the summit at Bharat Mandapam after assuming the BRICS chairship on January 1, 2026. India’s theme for its BRICS chairship is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
The summit’s agenda includes political and security cooperation, economic and financial cooperation, as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
During India’s BRICS chairship, more than 350 meetings and high-level engagements have been organised across more than 25 Indian cities.

4. Donald Trump Nominates Hung Cao as US Navy Secretary
US President Donald Trump nominated Hung Cao on September 1, 2026, to serve as the permanent Secretary of the United States Navy.
Cao had been serving as the Acting Secretary of the Navy since April 22, 2026. Prior to that, he served as Under Secretary of the Navy.
The Secretary of the Navy is the civilian head of the Department of the Navy and has responsibility for the US Navy and Marine Corps under the Department of Defense.
Hung Cao retired from the US Navy with the rank of Captain in October 2021 after completing 25 years of military service. His career included special operations, diving and explosive ordnance disposal missions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia.
